Fire crews are still working on a wildfire in Kootenay National Park and Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park.

The fire is on the west side of the Continental Divide, 24 km from Banff and 2.5 km from Sunshine Village.

Parks Canada says the fire is relatively stable, and good progress has been made to keep the fire from spreading in priority areas. The fire is not a risk to communities in the Bow Valley.

The following areas remain open: Shadow Lake Lodge and other tourism operations in the area, Hawk Creek, and Redearth Trails to Ball Pass.

Closures remain in place in the Verdant Creek area of Kootenay National Park, and in the Egypt Lake and Brewster Creek areas of Banff National Park.

All highways in Banff National Park and Kootenay National Park remain open.

As of Monday, July 24, the operational closure of Sunshine Village will no longer be required and will be lifted. Hiking trails in the area will remain closed.

Backcountry camping permits in this area remain cancelled until further notice. Individuals with backcountry reservations in the area closure should contact 403-762-1556 or visit a Parks Canada Visitor Centre.

A fire ban is still in effect for both Banff and Kootenay National Parks due to the elevated fire danger and to prevent the possibility of human-caused fires.
