Preschool oral healthcare clinics are kicking off the month at the Okotoks Health and Wellness Centre.

The clinics are run by Alberta Health Services with the Town and are hosted once a month. They're great for families who may not have a benefits plan, a lower income, or just want their child's teeth checked.

Debbie Posey with Foothills Community Support Services says the check ups are quite thorough.

"The clinician does an oral exam of the teeth so she'll look at the child's teeth, gums and tongue and do a good check," she says. "They can also do a topical fluoride application."

Posey says she thinks these clinics are one of the ways the Town reinvested their money into oral health when fluoride was removed from the water system.

"It's recommended that children have their teeth checked at a fairly young age... between one and three is a good time to start having your child get used to having their teeth checked and having someone look at their teeth. It seemed like a good investment in the community."

Posey adds she's noticed an increase in interest for the clinics.

The clinic runs all day Saturday from 9:00 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. It's recommended residents call ahead by contacting (403) 995- 2662.

The next clinic date is November 7.
