This past summer Okotoks lost one of the oldest buildings in town.

The Old Creamery building was torn down due to structural damage caused by both fire and water that was used to fight the flames.

The town purchased the historic building about a year before the incident and now council is deciding what should take its place on the site.

Culture and Heritage Manager Allan Boss says council has had a number of different plans for the site but one in particular they hope will call the site it's future home.

"We've had the 'Together: We Can - 2016 Strategic Economic Development Plan' that recently came out, we've had our 'Cultural, Heritage + Arts Master Plan' and our 'Social Wellness Framework'. And they all talk about the need to animate down town and be an inclusive accepting and exciting place to live and visit. so the idea of helping to animate the down town core just makes sense and people always like markets. so we thought that would be the way to go."

Boss says council is really pushing for the market and is hoping businesses and individuals will also jump on board.

"Well council agrees with the motion that we should do a request for proposals which I've been working madly on." He says, "Once that goes out we will see if there's any businesses or any individuals who are interested in running the market on the site and once those responses come back we will have a look at them and make some decisions and potentially choose somebody to run a market there."

Town council hopes the proposed idea will create a more livable community and create an even stronger local economy.

Boss says the market would be a great opportunity for growth and activity within the town.

"I think a community market on the site would be quite a great way to continue the growth of our great street festivals and activity that's happening in the downtown. Okotoks is a great place to visit and we think this is just going to provide another opportunity for locals and visitors to enjoy our great city."

The proposal for the potential future market will be sent out later this month.
