This November marks the 30th Anniversary of Family Violence Prevention Month across Alberta.

Ally Cramm with the local Rowan House Emergency Shelter went before High River town council Monday to ask to again to place purple ribbons around the downtown.

"I gave a little explanation about what the ribbons mean to us and why they're so important, town council recognized that recognizing family violence is something they want to be a part of and it did indeed give us permission to do that," Cramm says.

She says the ribbons are meant to bring family violence out of the shadows.

"Family violence thrives in secrecy and it's very important that we rise our voices against it and speak out and let people know that this is something that is happening, not just in High River, it's in Alberta, it's everywhere," she says.

This year anyone who takes their picture with one of the ribbons or one of the attached postcards and posts it to the Rowan House facebook page or twitter page could win a $25 gift card from Tim Horton's.

During the month of November they'll be at the Light Up Okotoks event and a breakfast in Blackie.

She says customers can also donate $2 at the till at the Sobey's in Okotoks.
