Bring out your kilts it's time to celebrate Robbie Burns.

The Highwood Highland dancers of High River are planning to do just that, and the whole community is invited to come out, have some fun and help them to raise money.

Jackie Rowe says they have a society that's made up of the dancer's parents and they've decided to take some of the younger dancers on a trip to the "home land", Scotland to compete.

"We have taken our school to Scotland in the past, but not a group this young so we're very excited to take these ladies overseas," Rowe says. "The group was started to support dancers in our community and in our area so we're quite excited that this is our first big venture."

Rowe says it means a lot for the girls to be immersed in the culture.

"I don't know that we spend as much time talking about where we came from, about history in general, it's something that every dance that we do has a story behind it, or a myth, a popular culture behind it and that's part of the fun of the dances themselves, the dancers are always excited to learn what the story is behind each dance," she says. "And to be able to go where those stories began, to be able to see the original landscape and to really trace back where they came from because many of my dancers are of Scottish descent."

There hasn't been a Robbie Burns night in the town since before the 2013 flood so Rowe is happy to be able to bring it back again.

There will be live and silent auctions and the girls will be dancing aimed at raising funds for their trip.

The event goes January 22 at the Highwood Memorial Centre which includes all the staples including haggis.
