For the second straight year a program put on by the Rowan House Emergency Shelter will benefit from the Shaw Charity Classic golf event.

Community Relations Coordinator Ally Cramm says the Birdies For Kids program is back again.

"All the way from basically now to the event August 31, a number of participating charities get to use their platform to raise money in support of different programming and for us that's out Branches Preventative Education," Cramm says. "And so the way it works is people can make a flat donation or a birdies pledge,  and you say 'OK the PGA Tour champions could potentially hit approximately 875 birdies at the tournament' and you're donating five cents per birdie, or whatever you chose."

Cramm says if someone were to pledge five cents a birdie and 875 were hit, the donation would be $43.75.

After the donations were matched last year about $4,000 was raised for the program.

"We go into all of the schools in Foothills in Grades 2, 5 8 and 11 and talk about bullying, healthy relationships, dating  violence, trying to reach children early enough to break the cycle of violence so we empower them to make healthy choices into the future," she says.

A call to action's already gone out to the approximately 750 subscribers on the Rowan House e-mail list and if each gives just $5 they'll be close to that $4,000 again, even before the money is matched meaning they could easily double last year's total.
