The Rowan House Women's Emergency Shelter received a generous boost thanks to a local country artist's event.

Okotoks' Tanya Ryan has done a number of events for the Rowan House in the past and decided she wanted to take her event to a new scale.

"I've been teaching yoga around here for just over six years so I thought that was probably my best network to utilize so that's what I did," she explains. "I obviously integrated music because that's a big part of my life so I thought that was a good representation of me and this community and my relationship with it."

Her goal was to make the fundraiser the largest indoor yoga and music event the province has seen which brought in over 200 people including women, men, and children to the Crescent Point Regional Field House.

Ryan says she feels everyone deserves to feel safe and the Rowan House supports that mentality through their initiatives.

"Not only are they working as an intervention program but they work with women after they've been abused to reintegrate them into real life, additionally they're working on preventative education. Right now there is no government funding for preventative education so all of their resources for preventative education are coming from volunteer work and donations."

In total, Warriors for Women raised $10,711.60.

Ryan says she's thrilled with how the event turned out and hopes to bring it back next year.
