The Rowan House Society didn't let ransomware get the best of it recently.

Instead of meeting the demands of computer hackers a couple of months ago, the society shut down its website and emerged with a fresh, new look.

The new logo depicts a Rowan tree and Rowan House Society Executive Director Sherrie Botten says it's a strong reflection of the work the society does.

"The roots and the leaves and the solid trunk really reflect the work that we do," Botten explains. "There's a wonderful story behind the Rowan tree and the safety and sanctity that it would provide to people who planted a Rowan tree outside their house. It does really reflect and symbolize the work that we do with our residents and clients."

She says they turned the hacking incident into an opportunity to closely examine their web site, develop the rebranding, and ensure that all files stored on their server were protected and secure.

Botten says while they did not lose any information and were able to avoid paying ransom to the hackers, there was a cost of time and money associated with getting their server back up and running. She stresses that there was never any risk to the confidential, private information of donors or clients.

"We do not keep any private or confidential donor information either on our website or our server so no one would ever be able to access anything to do with our donors," she says. "And we also do not keep any of our confidential information on our clients or residents on our website or our server."
