A program focused on suicide prevention will be making its way to Okotoks in a few weeks.

McMan Youth, Family, And Community Services Association session Safe Talk will help people recognize when someone may be having thoughts of suicide and how to respond.

Sharon Brown, program supervisor with McMan, says there's a demand for the program.

"This is really aimed at anybody in the community so I'd say the need is pretty high," she says. "We hear about people talking about suicide attempts and suicide itself quite frequently."

Brown says suicidal thoughts can affect anyone.

"Whether it's someone in high school, your neighbour across the street, your hairstylist, anyone. It's just a really good thing to have because people do think about suicide and it's nice to be able to have those skills and those tools to recognize when someone is trying to tell you that they're having those thoughts."

Safe Talk is open to anyone 15-years-old and up and takes place from 1- 3:30 p.m. Apr. 18 at the Okotoks Recreation Centre.

Cost to register is $95.
