This week marks CP Rail's "Back To School Rail Safety Campaign" across the country.

From September 7-14 CP Police Services in partnership with local law enforcement will be keeping a close watch along the tracks to make sure both students and adults are being mindful of that hazards that can present themselves when being close to the tracks or on railway properties.

CP Spokesperson Salem Woodrow says any route that includes illegal or dangerous crossing of tracks is not a safe route to school.

"The goal of this campaign is to prevent railway crossing collisions and trespassing incidents by encouraging young people and adults to take the safe route to school and to be safe around railway operations," she says. "The safe route to school does not include trespassing on railway property."

Woodrow says CP has seen the number of fatalities increase due to unsafe acts and has prompted this campaign early in the school year.

"We have seen quite the increase in trespasser and crossing fatalities. January to July in Canada this year there has already been 29 trespasser fatalities and eight crossing fatalities, that compares to 31 and 10 in all of last year."

Pokemon Go has taken off in popularity amongst youth and adults and when catching a Pokemon near tracks or on rail property, Woodrow says those trying to become a Pokemon Master needs to elsewhere to catch em all.

"We have seen a challenge that has presented itself with Pokemon Go, we have seen an increase in the rates of trespassing due to sites appearing in and around CP property and we just want to make sure people know that tracks and trains are no go zone."
