School fees have been slashed across the province.

Education Minister David Eggen says some 600,000 students will benefit from the government's move.

"I can confirm today that our own review of every Board's school fee schedule and policies has confirmed that Alberta parents will be paying at least $54 million less than they did for the 2015-16 school year," Minister Eggen says. "What we are reducing or eliminating is instructional supplies and materials which is, like, photocopying and other fees of that kind, paper and so forth."

Busing fees for students who have to travel over 24 kilometres to their designated school are also being eliminated.

He says the Government looked for areas of efficiency where the could save to offset the money that parents won't have to shell out any more.

Eggen says he realizes it put a burden on school boards to move so quickly but a second sober look at school fees was necessary.
