We all know the rules when it comes to driving through construction zones.

Speed fines are doubled when workers are present.

But what about when they're not?

The Province has now changed the rules around that, forcing companies to cover up the reduced speed signs when the work site is empty, allowing drivers to go through at the normally posted speed limit.

Alberta Transportation Minister Brian Mason says he's heard from a lot of drivers who got tickets for going at regular speed when the sites are empty, prompting the government to make the changes.

When workers are present, speed fines and the number of demerits will continue to be double for those going above the posted, reduced speed limit.
