Safety on farms and ranches is a hot topic right now while the government moves ahead with legislation and others saying education is the key.

The Calgary Stampede is welcoming over 700 students from around southern Alberta for its first ever Farm Safety Day Thurs May 26.

Communications Manager, Western Events and Agriculture, Kristina Barnes says they'll cover events that could happen on or off the farm.

"We do have things like a rollover simulator as well so things just like driving down your gravel road, those kinds of activities to help them, no matter what they're doing, whether they're on their farm or travelling to and from, we're going to focus on pretty much everything we can," she says.

Students will get hands on experience with some of the risks on the farm including animal behaviour, grain safety and confined spaces, handling chemicals and electrical and large machinery safety.

She says it's a chance to arm the students with tools and knowledge they need to practice safe habits as they become the farm leaders of tomorrow.

"AltaLink stepped in and they are supporting this event, they are a big supporter and certainly something we're happy to have, they feel strongly about the issue of farm safety and do want to play a big role in this event and certainly making sure that the youth are well educated safe," Barnes says. "AltaLink will be focused on a lot of the electrical safety, they're bringing in a lot of their employees and their equipment to help us in that area so it'll be great to have them on board as well."

The events will be held at the AltaLink Hall at the Agrium Western Events Centre on Stampede Park.
