Students at C. Ian McLaren School in Black Diamond will have a little more room to learn this coming school year.

Carbon Constructors installed a 80 square metre modular classroom on the east end of the school July 25.

Drew Chipman, Assistant Superintendent Corporate Service for Foothills School Division, says the modular classroom comes as enrollment rates skyrocket.

"Our population, and utilization at that school is over 90%," he says. "We made an application this last school year and were successful in getting an approval, so we're excited to get in there and give that group a bit more space."

Currently 218 students are enrolled at C. Ian McLaren, a number which is projected to grow in the next school year.

Chipman says he's happy students and staff will have more space, as the modular will reduce class sizes.

"They'll be able to have a bit more room to have break out spaces, have teachers working with group of students a little more easily, and students will have a bit more room for them to work together. It's good to have one more classroom in there, it will reduce the sizes of some of the classes that are in the school."

The Alberta Government owns and funds modular classrooms, Chipman says the only cost to FSD was moving it, with a price tag of about $155,000.

He's expecting the modular classroom will be set up and ready to go for the fall.
