Foothills residents are encouraged to embrace nature and get active for the Foothills Country Hospice's new event.

The Hike for Hospice will take participants on a four kilometre journey through Okotoks while raising money to support programs at the hospice.

Dawn Elliott, executive director of the hospice, says the hike is taking place on a paved pathway system so everyone can take part.

"We want people of all ages and all abilities to be able to come and do the walk so we chose the paved pathway because we thought it would be easier for everybody to hike on it and there's no worries about traffic or lights or anything like that."

The start line for the hike is the north end parking lot at the Okotoks Recreation Centre.

Elliott says the Hike for Hospice is part of a larger, national movement.

"It's part of a Canadian initiative that was started by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association," she says. "This is similar to the Terry Fox run, it's held every year and we decided we wanted to do something like this in Okotoks for our hospice so that's why the idea came about."

The Hike for Hospice takes place May 7 and registration costs $10.
