With hot dry temperatures it is tempting to take a dip in a river or a lake to cool off this weekend.

A recent tragedy in High River happened when a 48 year old male left his group to find a deeper swimming hole.

He never returned.

RCMP are reminding people to be safe in the water by swimming in groups, wearing life jackets, and being aware of peoples skill levels.

High River Sgt. Brent Hawker says it is important to use care in the water.

"Underneath the surface of the water we don't know what lurks," said Hawker.

The police do get called to the bridge when people are jumping off the bridge and he adds that channel under the bridge changes frequently and there are strong undertows.

"We are encouraging people to use care whether they are in the rivers or visiting lakes within the Province of Alberta."

To date there has been 23 drownings, 10 within RCMP duristrictions.

"Which is certianly more than we would like to see," said Hawker.
