Some rural municipalities have been hit hard handing over Education Property Taxes to the Province on oil and gas properties that are no longer being paid by the company's.

Oil and gas facilities are taxed until the Alberta Energy Regulator has them on record as abandoned.

Once they're abandoned, they're no longer assessed.

That process can take years and, in the meantime, the municipality has to send the Education Property Tax to the Province.

The Provincial government has created a Tax Credit that will allow Municipal Districts to be reimbursed for the property tax they've paid on those oil and gas properties.
