The Foothills Catholic Immigration Society and the Okotoks RCMP are teaming up to host a Safety Symposium for all new families living in Okotoks who may not be familiar with Canadian traditions and how policing works locally.

The Okotoks Library will play host to the event welcoming the public.

Coordinator with FCIS Nancy Risdon says there will be plenty of discussion topics.

"The roles of policing in Canada and also the difference between the RCMP and other agencies that also operate in Okotoks," she says. "Also it's going to touch on the trust of police in Canada and how important that is."

With a North American pastime coming Monday night, Risdon says many will get their first look at what Halloween is as well.

"There's going to be some safety tips varying from different topics and also we're going to talk about Halloween safety for a lot of these families this is their first Halloween and so this is all new to them and we're going to talk about the safety side of Halloween and how to keep your kids safe."

Risdon is encouraging all new families of the Okotoks community to come out and meet those who serve and protect them on a daily basis.

She says there's plenty of new faces in Okotoks that would benefit from the presentation.

"We work with over 300 families and that's always changing. That's a very fluid number it's always rising and falling but there's new families all the time coming."

In attendance will be Okotoks Sgt Sukh Randhawa along with other members of the RCMP and will have some of their equipment and cars on display for kids to get a hands on look at what they do.

The presentation starts at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday night.
