Foothills MP John Barlow is standing up for Albertans and the economy when it comes to the national unemployment rate rising to 7.2%.

In January 10,000 Albertans lost their jobs alone and that's not sitting well with him.

Barlow says the current Trudeau government is starting to have the tenancies of a familiar government back in the mid 1970's.

"Prime Minister Trudeau Sr. had a national energy program-- killed Alberta, Prime Minister Trudeau Jr. has no energy program and it's killing Alberta," he says. "What they need is certainty in industry. Stakeholders we've spoken with if they know the framework they're going to be working in, they will come back and invest."

The Deputy Critic of Employment, Workforce Department and Labour says both the provincial and federal governments need to find a way to help Albertans pull out of the economic rut they're currently in.

"They need to have some confidence, the Prime Minister and the provincial government of Alberta need to come up and stand shoulder to shoulder with the resource sector, say we have confidence in you if these projects meet the regulatory regime in place we will support them."

Recently Prime Minister Trudeau sat down with different individuals on certain topics on a CBC special including a one on one with a laid off oil field worker and Barlow says it was hard to watch the leader of nation give the worker no confidence in the current government.

"Alberta's families and Alberta's economy and the resource sector is not a priority for this government. How could you not know that was going to be the question that's asked to him which I find extremely frustrating that he didn't have an answer for an unemployed oil worker in Alberta that means that this government has no strategy, no plan to address the ten's of thousands of Albertans who have been laid off."

Barlow stated the following in a media release on Friday the following.

"Unemployment in Alberta is at a 20 year high and now sits above the national average. We hope this will show Justin Trudeau that there is a pressing need for him to come up with a concrete plan for workers in the natural resource industry," he says. "The Liberal Party's record of dismissing  our country's energy sector is alarming and shows disregard for Canadian families who depend on its success. The Liberals have done nothing but pile on additional costs, processes and uncertainty on a struggling industry and putting a further burden on already-strained workers."
