A tornado warning is currently in effect in the MD of Foothills.

The warning includes Okotoks, Calgary, and MD of Foothills near Priddis.

The MD of Foothills is currently informing residents to stay inside and find safe shelter.

A dopplar radar indicated a severe thunderstorm just north of Priddis was moving southeast at about 12:40 on Wednesday afternoon.

The radar recorded the storm moving towards the southeast at 30 km/h with the southwest corner of Calgary in the path of the tornado.

In addition to a tornado warning this storm can also produce golf-ball sized hail.

Environment Canada recommends the following:

Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately.

Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.

We will continue to update the situation when more information becomes available.
