High River Town Council gave first reading to a new bylaw governing water, waste water and storm water services at their meeting Monday, July 16.

High River's Manager of Accounting Services, Ray Macintosh says it doesn't mean rates for water and waste water are going up, but that can't be said for the Town's storm water system.

"Right now our residents are paying $2.60 a month. That'll go up to $6.00 a month. And again, that's just to get it off the tax account and onto the utilities where it should be."

Macintosh says it's part of the Town's cost recovery program when it comes to water use, which means it's user based and not subsidized through municipal taxes.

Because Council's only had first reading, the issue now goes to the public at a pair of information sessions Thursday, August 9 and Thursday, August 16, from 4 to 4 p.m. both days, where the Town will gather public feedback before moving ahead.
