The newer members of High River's Town Council got to hear what the Rowan House women's emergency shelter is all about at Tuesday's meeting.

Executive Director Sherrie Botten says it's also a good time to talk about November being Family Violence Prevention month.

"This is November and this is Family Violence Prevention month and it's a time for council to proclaim that in the town of High River and that's amazing," Botten says. "It's also a time where council gives us the approval to put some of our awareness materials around town, so we have the ribbons on lamp posts and trees and and we also have our shoe lace campaign."

Both are aimed at starting conversations about bringing domestic violence out into the open.

Councillor Don Moore thanked Botten for bringing the shelter to the community, but she returned the compliment.

"Rowan House has been so supported by this town council, the town of High River has embraced us, we came to High River to build the emergency shelter and it's just wonderful the support we get from the town," Botten says.

A family violence prevention workshop will be held Nov. 28 at the High River library.
