The tub room at Oilfields Hospital's long term care centre will get a makeover thanks to the Sheep River Health trust and its generous donors.

On Thursday, Century 21 Foothills presented the Health Trust with a cheque for $5,000 at the hospital, which has been allocated to go towards the revitalization.

Carla Ralph, Site Manager for Long Term Care at Oilfields, says the goal in redoing the tub room, where some patients bathe and go to the bathroom, is to make it feel more comfortable.

"About 80- 90 per cent of our population in long term care is often suffering from some form of dementia. Once they lose their memory and a lot of their ability to rationalize, what they trust is their feelings so it's very important for us to have an environment that triggers that safe, secure, meaningful space where they feel very cared for and don't have to worry about their security."

The donation from Century 21 Foothills was part of their commitment to the Health Trust to give them $5,000 a year for three years.

Blair Gordon, Broker and Owner of Century 21 Foothills, says it's great to support a facility he has a personal tie to.

"We have roots here, my dad and step mom lived here for a number of years and they had treatment and care here so it's good to be a part of that and it's a welcomed addition to the hospital and health and wellness."

Ralph says the generosity from the Health Trust and donor's like Century 21 plays an important role.

"It means everything, without their support we know this kind of project wouldn't be possible, we definitely are able to provide the 'need to haves' we just can't do the 'nice to haves' and that's what the foundation presents for us."

Depending on how donations go, the tub room's makeover could be starting in the fall.

The Health Trust's annual "Together We Make a Difference" Radiothon with the Eagle 100.9 in support of local health and wellness initiatives takes place Thursday, AprIl, 13 at Okotoks Sobeys.
