Anyone looking to keep urban chickens and bees in High River won't want to miss the information session on May 26. Owner of Jungle Out There Pet Services Cassandra Kirkpatrick says the session will be general information, mostly to outline what a daily routine could look like and what sort of care is involved.

"Just some basic things. What it looks like to get into chickens in regards to housing and what kind of time and cost consideration is involved. Sometimes people have concerns if they're going to smell or be loud, so we're going to address some of those."

Kirkpatrick says Kristin MacDonald will speak on her experiences with keeping bees and Megan Wylie from Urban Chicks in Millarville will be speaking on a rental hen program as well.

"They set you up with a coop and the hens and all the feed for the summer. So, it's just a really nice option for people looking to get into birds but they aren't sure if they want to commit long term yet."

Kirkpatrick says this session will give a basic idea of the time and money involved, and hopefully there will be a more in-depth workshop in June.

"That workshop will cover different breeds, how to over winter birds, what you should be feeding them, bio-security practices. It will go a lot more in depth. This is just to introduce people to the idea and just kind of get the ball rolling."

High River Town Council is holding the third reading for the urban chicken and bee bylaws on May 24.
