Local bird watchers are pretty happy to see hundreds of new reflectors up on the power lines surrounding Frank Lake East of High River.

Long a stopping point for migrating bird species, the mortality rate for larger birds like geese, pelicans and swans was getting too high.

Local wildlife expert Greg Wagner applauds the hard work done by Alta-Link to string the reflectors.

"It's to their credit that they've done that. It's definitely going to help out. And we'll see if it's the solution that's needed. And if not, we'll come up with something else. Feather in their cap. Way to go!"

Wagner says, even though the reflectors are small, they should be effective.

"The analogy I like to use is they're a lot like a reflector on a bike tire. We all had those when we we're kids. And they're not that substantial, but they work! If you shine a light on a bike, you see them."

Wagner says mortality rates are much higher in the Spring than Fall, so he says we'll have to wait until then to see if the reflectors do their job bring down the number of birds killed by the power lines each year.
