Volunteers helping to take people to safety after the 2013 flood.

The Town of High River is looking for volunteers to share what they learned about getting groups working together after a disaster.

The Director of Emergency Management Carly Benson says it's a two-day workshop that comes out of what happened in 2013 during and after the flood.

"We're looking at how can we incorporate community volunteers into disaster response and recovery," Benson says. "The challenge that we sometimes had in 2013 and we want to make sure that should this ever happen again we can maximize the use of our community volunteers because we know they provide a lot of value."

They've chosen a rather unique scenario, a meteorite strike on the town, so volunteers can focus on the task at hand without being worried about it really happening.

"We're actually really excited about this because we're working with a team that brings a lot of international experience to creating these kinds of interactive workshops," she says. "So basically on the first day we're going to start with the disaster simulation, kind of run through it to help identify and get us in the mind set of 'ok, this is the problem we're going to tackle', and then we're going to break off into small groups and be walked through a facilitated workshop to come up with strategies on how we can effectively use volunteers to help us deal with the situation we went through in the morning."

She says on day two they run the simulation again using some of the strategies they came up with to see what should be incorporated into the Town's Emergency Plan and can be shared with other municipalities.

The workshop goes Sept. 29 and 30.
