Many volunteers are needed to help participate in a mock-disaster workshop.

Director of emergency management for the Town of High River, Carly Benson, say they'll be playing out a particular scenario.

"The scenario is that a meteorite has struck High River, so there is some damage and destruction in the community and there are a lot of volunteers who are showing up who want to help us rebuild," she says. "And that's the focus of the exercise is how can we use these volunteers effectively to help us recover faster."

Benson says this workshop is crucial because there aren't many plans on how to manage volunteers, not just in High River, but across Canada as well.

"We're trying to do something creative and brand new and we're really looking for that community feedback to make it more effective," she says.

Benson says the workshop is a great way for residents to get involved and provide their input.

"It's intended to be a fun, interactive, community workshop. We know people in this community are very interested in emergency management, they have a lot of ideas on how we can do things better, so we're hoping this is a forum for people to come and help us shape the future of emergency management."

The workshop runs on both Sept. 29 and 30; however, Benson says participants are not obligated to stay for both days.
