High River Mayor Craig Snodgrass has proclaimed National Volunteers week for Sunday, April 15 to Saturday, April 21.

And Council got to be the first to know who the volunteers of the year are for High River at the meeting on Monday, April 9.

Snodgrass said volunteer week is about celebrating every single person in the community who puts their hands up.

The volunteers of the year will be honoured during the week.

"I think it is important that these people are recognized, they are nominated," Snodgrass said. "This Town doesn't thrive without volunteers."

The group award this year goes to the Kraft Hockeyville Volunteers.

"Regardless of who won it the win coming out of that is just how connected the community was for a few weeks."

He added Hank Leefreink and his work with the parades, Scott Forbes and the work he does for six or eight organizations in this town, the work that everyone knows that Tate Barton does.

"Everyone knows what Tate Barton puts in and his Lemonade Stand, it is quite incredible where he's taken that."

And two local businesses that always go above and beyond.

"Coco Lux and Western Financial group on the business end. Both of those businesses put a ton back into this town every chance they get."

The winners include:

Hank Leefreink, seniors category

Scott Forbes, adult

Tate Barton, youth category

Kraft Hockeyville Volunteers, group of the year

Coco Lux, small business of the year

Western Financial, large business of the year
