Vulcan residents gathered Friday, November 9, to remember the life of Former Mayor Howard Dirks who passed away Friday, October 26.

Dirks served as Vulcan's Mayor from 2010 to 2013 and along with his Council helped High River residents deal with the flood of 2013 by gathering food and clothing for displaced residents.

Vulcan Councillor, Paul Taylor, who served with Dirks says they didn't always see eye to eye, but Dirks was always a gentleman.

"If you ever asked him how things were going, no matter how bad they were. He'd come out with his Howard, "Just Great!" He always had a positive outlook on things."

Dirks was a politician in B.C. serving in the Social Credit cabinets of Premier's Bill Vander Zalm and Rita Johnston from 1986 to 1991.

Dirks ran again for a seat in the B.C. Legislature again in 1996, this time as a Liberal, but failed to make it in, before retiring to Vulcan.

He was 80 and is survived by his wife Lorna.
