Every year hundreds of women and children pass through High River's Rowan House Emergency Shelter.

Executive Director Sherrie Botten says this month, they'll get pro-active and spread the message during Family Violence Prevention Month.

Botten says violence can start early in life, but so can violence prevention.

"Last year were met with just over three thousand kids in communities. We also have our community groups, our "Healthy Relationship" groups for women. So we're doing a lot of that prevention work out there in the community and in November it's about awareness, helping the community understand Family Violence is right here where you live, and there are things you can do to prevent it and support us."

Botten says the last three months have been very busy at the shelter with 69 people living there, 29 of which were kids.

She says the sad part is, those numbers continue to rise.
