The Town of High River is reminding dog owners that the deadline to register your pooch has passed.

Adviser to Community Services Patrick Webb says it's the owners responsibility to get their pet registered. "In the Town of High River licenses are good for one year. We would like people to come forward and pay their fees, and renew the licenses for dogs that already have them, or get new licenses for dogs they just got over Christmas perhaps."

He says it's $25 for spayed and neutered dogs, and $50 for ones that aren't.

Webb says it's a good deal for the money. He says if your dog escapes having it registered makes it easier for them return it to you.

He says you can register online but your first registration has to be done in person at town offices.

He says the Town is looking at options to make registration less of a hassle. "Some other municipalities in Canada have gone to a permanent licensing format on dogs."

"We're looking at that aspect for simplicity, but it would cost more obviously. If it's feasible we're going to start that as soon as possible."
