Okotoks resident will have to get their mitts on to shovel their driveways soon as the Foothills has its first real snowfall of the season.

This year some will be doubling up the shoveling by their own choice, volunteers in the Adopt-a-Sidewalk program will be out and about shoveling the driveways and sidewalks of residents who need a helping hand.

This program, through the Family Resource Centre in Okookts, pairs shovelers or "Snow Angels" with residents who are unable to shovel their own walks.

Laura Padget, Specialist with the Family Resource Centre says normally they would be asking for volunteers but have a full list of "snow angels" to help out this year.

"The bigger piece right now is informing the community of the availability of the program. So if there are any residents out there that are struggling to keep their front sidewalks clean or access to their garage or front steps and need support like this then we'd like to let them know that it is a program that is available to them."

Padget says the process of getting a snow angel is pretty simple.

"Residents that need help with snow removal connect with us, they let us know where they live, what the need is and what areas that need to be shoveled and then we assign a specific volunteer to a specific house. So as opposed to a large area, a volunteer and client that comes to us are matched for the remainder of the winter."

The Adopt-a-Sidewalk program has seen lots of different volunteers in different.

"We have a large array of volunteers from different ages and demographics, we have a number of hockey teams who come out and are assigned to different properties, some of the boys will come out and shovel different properties throughout the winter, we have a number of seniors who are volunteers who are active and like to get out in the fresh air and are retired and have some time and of course we have working-age men and women who have some time in the morning who shovel their own and then head to their community property. It's a large age range of volunteers."

The program runs from mid-October to the end of April.
