Alberta's provincial government has announced a plan to attract doctors to rural communities.

The Rural Education Supplement and Integrated Doctor Experience (RESIDE) program will be providing $2 million to 20 new family doctors a year over the next three years.

Additionally, physicians will be offered other incentives including tuition fee reimbursements of $60,000, and remote community incentives ranging from $20,000 to $40,000, depending on the remoteness of the community.

Physicians brought in with the program will practise in one of 15 communities:

  • Fox Creek
  • Grande Cache
  • Fort Vermilion
  • Wabasca
  • High Level
  • Rimbey
  • Lloydminster
  • Milk River
  • Cold Lake
  • Lac La Biche
  • Rocky Mountain House
  • Fort Macleod
  • Barrhead
  • Ponoka
  • Athabasca

Other communities are expected to be added as the program continues.

The first group of participants will begin their practises this fall.
