An Okotoks veterinarian was recently honoured.

Dr. Tye Perrett was awarded 'Consultant of the Year' for 2021 by the Academy of Veterinary Consultants.

It was an unexpected development for Dr. Perrett that almost left him speechless.

"To be honest, complete shock. It wasn't anything I would've expected. It took me by total surprise. It's an award that I know a number of other veterinarians have received that is widely recognized in the profession, so it never once crossed my mind that anyone would even consider my name, let alone to be given the award. It was beyond my realm of thinking, quite honestly."

Dr. Perrett works with Feedlot Health Management Services, which provides consulting services regarding animal health to feedlot operations.

He's a born-and-raised Albertan who grew up on a cow-calf operation near Edmonton, and working in this field was a goal for Dr. Perrett for all his life.

Soon after graduating high school, he attended the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.

With that being the case, he says landing his job with Feedlot Health Management Services was a dream come true.

"Being able to be part of a team that works so well together, holding each other to a high standard, and having high expectations from our clients... doing what I do every day is one of those lucky things. Not everybody gets to live their dream job."

Despite that, Dr. Perrett never expected this kind of honour to be awarded to him.

"In the world that my colleagues and I walk into every day, this is one of those recognitions that an individual like myself doesn't really even consider or dream of. To have been surprised by it is one of those highlights in your career that you don't expect and won't come, probably, ever again."
