Those looking to lend a hand to local organizations in need should consider local animal shelters.

There's never a shortage of animals in need of care, and unfortunately, there are often shortages of supplies.

Volunteer with Heaven Can Wait Animal Rescue Sam Burnett said they could always use more of the essentials.

"We're always looking for dog and cat food, lots of supplements and medical donations would be phenomenal. Some of those veterinary supplies can be expensive around the kennel. Then just general supplies, laundry soap, bleach, and detergents. There's a tonne of cleaning there every day, day in, day out."

Of course, adopting or fostering would be a great Christmas present for an animal in need.

Burnett says households who are ready to welcome a pet into their home are always welcome to come down, but he recommends going in with an open mind.

"You've got to find an animal there that reaches into your soul and is a good fit for you. I think a lot of people go out with the idea that they're looking for a specific type of dog, not realizing that if you just open up your heart a little bit and let that go, you can find an animal that's a really good fit for you and your family."

A wishlist can be found on their website, where they also take monetary donations.

They also post "Christmas Foster Candidates" on their Facebook page regularly in December.
