Black Diamond Mayor Sharlene Brown says it's a matter of "wait and see" with the new NDP government

Reaction is still pouring in from across Alberta following the NDP's historic majority government victory in last week's provincial election.

One local municipality following the election very closely was the Town of Black Diamond, as they have many outstanding projects that require government funding.

Mayor Sharlene Brown says the change in government may mean a few small delays in securing that funding.

"We have to let the provincial guys go through their process and get established first, and then we'll know who we will need to contact based on that information. Everything is all still so new, it's hard for anybody to put any pieces into place right now."

The NDP became the first party to overthrow the PC government on Tuesday, who had been at the helm of Alberta for the past four decades.

Brown says nobody really knows what the future of the province looks like with premier-elect Rachel Notley and the NDPs in power.

"We've had the same group of people and the same party for 44 years, so everything in itself is going to change and it's just a wait and see. You know, we are just at the whims of whatever happens with the province. And it will be a new group to get to know, and new relationships that need to be formed."

One relationship that won't be new for the Town will be with their MLA, as Livingstone-Macleod constituents re-elected the Wildrose Party's Pat Stier with close to 40% of the popular vote.

Brown says having a familiar face represent the riding in the legislature is a big plus for the entire community.

"Having consistency with having Pat as our MLA is a great thing. Pat knows us, we know Pat, and from a municipal perspective, he's worked on our behalf on a lot of different programs and projects. So, we are going to continue fostering that relationship, and move it along the way it needs to be moved."

In regards to town needs, Brown says funding for river mitigation projects is near the top of the list.
