You can tell there's an election coming as politicians are coming out with plenty of promises of what they'll do if they get elected.

The latest comes from Federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, who says if his party forms government, he'll make maternity benefits tax free.

He says on a salary of $50,000, that's a saving of about $4,000 on taxes.

Scheer says he'd remove the Federal Income Tax from employment insurance maternity and EI paternal benefits, by providing a non-refundable tax credit of 15 per cent on any income earned under those programs.

In a release, Scheer says today's young parents are worried about their future and under enough pressure and are looking for help.

“Justin Trudeau said he would help the middle class, but the last four years show that he is not as advertised. He raised taxes on 80 percent of middle-class families and brought in a carbon tax that makes everyday essentials more expensive,” said Scheer.
