Flu season isn't over just yet, and with school back in session, chances of spreading contagious illnesses are up.

According to the Foothills School Division, approximately10% of students of Meadow Ridge School were absent due to illness in early December.

In many cases, it can be tough for parents to tell if they should keep their kids home for the day or send them to school.

Assistant Superintendent of Learning Services with the Foothills School Division Caroline Roberts says not all symptoms should prompt an absence from school.

"Some guidelines we have and that we communicate to parents is to send your child to school if the symptoms are minor. Maybe a runny nose, or they're a little stuffy, or have just a little bit of a cough."

FSD recommends cleanliness practices in these cases, such as thorough hand-washing and sneezing into the inner elbow.

"If they have been sick maybe wait for a 24 hour period after they no longer have symptoms like a fever, throwing up, or having stomach issues."

According to the Foothills School Division, two absences a month can cause a student to struggle in school.

Roberts says parents should notify the school about absences of any kind in order to avoid the student falling behind.

"It's really important for parents to contact the school when a child is being to be absent, and the reason for that absence. Also, to be in contact with the teacher so that the student doesn't fall behind, and they can get caught up on any missed learning."

For parents who are unsure about the severity of certain illnesses, Roberts recommends Alberta Health Services' HEAL website.
