FSD Supreintendent John Bailey is looking forward to meeting the new minister of education.

There's a new man at the helm of the province's education department.

David Eggen has now been sworn as the Minister of Education, and the Minister of Culture and Tourism.

Foothills School Division Superintendent, John Bailey, says he should get a chance to meet with Eggen by the end of June.

Bailey says he plans to tell the new minister about some of the positives happening in FSD and some of the challenges as well.

"We're working on improving our academic result, our challenges with enrollment growth and space," he says. "Also, just to know that our mandate is we're here to work with him and make our public education system the best we can for our children."

Minister Eggen is a former teacher himself, and Bailey says the time in the classroom should serve him well.

"I would assume he'll be well aware of what the province has been trying to accomplish in classrooms the last number of years," he says. "I would think he'll be up on assessments and curriculum changes and all those will be a benefit. "

Bailey says the NDP's platform is favourable towards education, as they made campaign promises about consistent and reliable funding, a huge issue for school boards.

"They talked about sustainable and predictable funding for school boards and that's a big issue for us," Bailey says. "We really very much have been year to year and you get into this time of year and it really is very difficulty."
