High River, Okotoks and Blackie firefighters were called out to a massive house fire on Sun. May 24 around 9 p.m. just East of Highway 2, near the Mazeppa Gas Plant.

M.D. of Foothills Fire Chief, Jim Smith, says there were no injuries and says he credits this to working smoke detectors.

"There was one individual home at the time, but he managed to get out and save his cats and a few things and that was it," he says. "The smoke detector alerted him to the fire, so having that working smoke detector did save his life."

Smith, says it took quite a while to contain the fire because there were sheets of metal in and around the home.

"We couldn't get at the fire, so we ended up having to cut holes in the walls just to get at the fire itself," he says. "So it took us a little bit to get there, but we finally got there."

He says although the house could not be saved, the firefighters did a great job responding to the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, although Smith predicts the cause will be ruled undetermined.
