Compton Petroleum has withdrawn an application for a licence to drill a well in the Gladys field 13-kilometers east of Okotoks.

They had originally applied to drill a vertical natural gas well.

One area landowner had filed an intervention claiming concerns about health and safety, a drop in property values and the possible contamination of water wells.

He also said it would cause problems farming the land and make it impossible to sub-divide once the well is completed.

The resident withdrew his objections after an agreement was reached for compton to drill at a more mutually satisfactory spot.

The company will have to re-apply to the Energy and Utilities Board.
