High River Councillor, Betty Hiebert has stepped forward for an another four years on High River council if re-elected later this month.

When asked why she decided to run again, Hiebert explained, "I think I have something to give, not just because I have experience, but because I care about the people, I am one of the people."

She says, we need to put safety first in High River, that doesn't mean just flood, it means fire and road safety and police protection.

"One thing I will push for if elected, " she says, "is an early warning system."

"Over and over we have heard that people didn't get an early enough warning on June 20th and my fear would be that if anything like this happened in the night, we'd have no way of warning the whole populace."

For example she says, we have a siren at the fire hall, lets put in a few more and have a system so residents can be warned.

"We have to make people feel that this is a safe place to be and to live, which means mitigation both up the river and within town, and have a better system in place."

This June's event was unprecedented and nobody knew what to do, but we have learned a ton, and I believe that because I have gone through this event as a Councillor I can help, knowing what we tried and what worked and what didn't work, says Hiebert.

The High River Councillor Forum will be held on October 10th from 6:30pm - 9pm at the Highwood Memorial.

Municipal Election Day is October 21st.
