The Highwood Golf and Country Club made a request for financial assistance to High River Town Council back on Monday, January 28.

They were looking for a reduction in their municipal taxes.

The issue was resolved during the Monday, March 25 meeting of Town Council.

The Town didn't give them a tax break, instead coming up with another plan to help the course which has been struggling financially since the 2013 flood.

Town Council decided to give the Club a one time grant of $70,000, and say they will look at signing a guarantee for a loan should the club ever need one, in an attempt to get a lower interest rate.

However, that still needs to pass first reading as a bylaw and go to a public hearing and then more debate from Council before they decide on whether or not to do that.

Former board member and special advisor to the Highwood Golf and Country Club, Steven Muth says he's glad Council has agreed to help the club.

"Councils decision at the most recent meeting regarding the request from the Highwood Golf and Country Club is more than what we could have hoped for, and is an excellent show of support and we could not be more thankful and appreciative of the efforts of Town Council and administration."

Muth says the grant will be put to good use.

"It's going to have an immediate impact to the club, because it's going to help with some potential cash flow short falls that we could run into this year depending on how weather and the season goes."

Muth say that prior to the 2013 flood many of the club members were from out of High River.

"So a lot of our members were quite angry and disenchanted through all of the reconstruction of the berm during 2014 and into 2015. So they took their golfing dollars elsewhere, and we have not been able to bring those members back."
