A local business owner is bringing more attention to High River's downtown with an active twist.

Shaun O'Brien owner of The Daily Male in High River has kick-started a local hockey league which will run each Sunday on 3rd Avenue until Christmas.

The league grabbed interest from local sports fans but also from some town officials.

High River town Councillor Cathy Couey attended the game on Thanksgiving Sunday and says it's a great way to bring the community together.

"Its a fantastic idea to bring people downtown when its a bit quieter and more importantly a great event for our community to come down and watch or take part in."

Councillor Couey also says street hockey is a well loved tradition.

"Street hockey is something I think lots of us grew up with, whether we played or it was played on our street, I think its a homage to our youth, it should be lots of fun."

High River's Mayor Craig Snodgrass is planning to attend the next game on Sunday, October 20.

Snodgrass will be dropping the first face-off of the regular season for the local league.
