Fire departments around Southern Alberta are doing their part to help spread some cheer during the pandemic.

The High River Fire Department has taken to doing drive-by's at the homes of young kids and seniors celebrating birthday's.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says it's a great idea.

"It's really something, and not just for kids. Virginia Jenkinson, a 100 years old. She got the drive by the other day which is just fantastic. Just something to lift spirits, no question."

Snodgrass says the pandemic lockdown really is hardest on the kids.

"The longer this goes on the more stoked up they get at home and they get restless. Just little things like not being able to go to the swimming pool for a couple of hours once a week, go to the zoo. Just these little outings that become normal for us and you can't do it anymore. It's just going to get harder and harder on the kids. That's for sure."

Snodgrass says little things like this are important to the mental well being of residents.
