Nanton Residents who are owned by dogs, will soon be getting an off leash dog park right in town.

In Nanton's regular council meeting on Monday, Jan. 20th Councillors granted the Nanton Leo's a plot of land after hearing from residents.

Mayor Jennifer Handley says administration was super excited to see the Leo's taking the leash when it came to the project.

"Council has wanted a dog park for so many years, but of course there's just so many other projects that just take priority and we just never had the resources to move forward. We actually had the Nanton Leo's Club come to us about four months ago with interest in building in a dog park."

Part of the agreement is that the Leo's would take on the project fully, including fences, benches and helping with landscaping all they needed was a piece of land from the town.

Handley says administration moved forward in contacting residents to see their thoughts on the perfect location for such a project.

"So what we did, was put out a survey to our residents and we had a huge response from dog owners and other residents, over 150 replies which we were able to use for statistical results in council. So, council basically gave the Leo's two different lots to consider and give us feedback on, one was on the east side of the highway and the other in Westview between the water reservoirs."

Almost 60 percent of respondents preferred the Westview location, which is what council granted the Leos on Monday's meeting.

Handley along with the rest of Nanton is excited about the project, as it will hopefully decrease the use of ball diamonds and school yards as off leash areas from which the town receives many complaints.
