There is no need to go to Broadway if you are interested in going to see a musical this season.

There isn't even a need to hop into your vehicle.

Students in the musical theatre program at Foothills Composite high school will be performing the musical Chicago, starting December 8th.

Jessica Kelly, Theatre Director and Drama Instructor, explains why they chose Chicago.

"It's always been a personal favourite of mine," explains Kelly. But admits that the original Broadway version is a tad too risqué for a high school performance.

Luckily, they found a teen version more suitable for students.

"That got us really excited," Kelly says. "And we also knew going into this year who we had for lead students, and we knew we had very, very strong female leads. So, it was an easy choice, because we have some actors that are just very, very capable singers and performers as a whole. And so, we wanted to give those people an opportunity to showcase their talents in their final year of the program."

The musical theatre program at Foothills Composite is made of students in grades ten to twelve.

But don't let their age dissuade you from attending.

Kelly explains that the students have been rehearsing every day.

"So, because it's a class, we actually have our musical theatre class every day, built into our timetable. And then we also have students Mondays and Wednesdays after school until 5."

That works out to be about 15 hours a week of rehearsals, and they have been rehearsing since September.

On top of that, they had the Alberta Dance and Drama Academy come in and help with choreography.

There will be six performances of Chicago open to the public, with the first show happening December 8th.

But, just like Broadway, make sure you check for available tickets ahead of time.

Tickets cost $22.63 and can be purchased on Eventbrite.
