With the start of a new school year, there are a couple of rules of the road you might want to keep in mind when finding somewhere to park, even if it is just for a few minutes.

Okotoks peace officer Trevor LaDuke explains that not only is parking too close to a stop sign illegal, but that it's also potentially dangerous.

"If they are parking there, they could create accidents because it causes blind spots. So that's why five metres seems like a lot, but there's a reason for that distance being set out."

People also need to be careful when parking in a residential area.

"We want to remind people not to block the resident's driveway. You need to leave 1.5 meters of clearance from a person's driveway, otherwise, it's an $81 fine."

Blocking it traps someone on their driveway or prevents them from accessing their driveway.

It's also important to remember not to park within five metres of a fire hydrant, also an $81 fine.
