This weekend will see several celebrations around the 50th anniversary around man's first steps on the moon.

No where will it be bigger than the Rothney Observatory near Priddis.

U-of-C Astronomer, Dr. Phil Langill says they'll have a couple of special guests on hand to talk about the moon and the importance of man going there.

"Talking about the history of and the future of space exploration. Some people talking about how to observe the moon, if you're interested in looking through a telescope and having a look at the moon up close. We've got lots of things going on outside. Lots of Apollo memorabilia and we're even going to launch some rockets."

Langill says there's been a lot of talk lately about building a space station called "Lunar Gateway" orbiting the moon.

"This is really exciting because if we want to do any more further, or deeper space exploration, I'm talking about people. Then to have a space station orbiting the moon, 400,000 kilometres away, is a great springboard to jump off and head out further."

The event runs from Noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 20.
