After an aborted attempt last year, the High River "Light Up George Lane Park" Committee, will start building a temporary skating rink in George Lane Park this week.

Committee Chair Ted Dawson says it's a design they can use over and over for the next 20 years.

"We found a sort of "pop-up rink." The boards are 12 to 18 inches high, so it's more for family skating as opposed to playing hockey. The rink itself is 60 feet by 100 feet, so it's a good size for folks to get out and enjoy themselves and right in the middle of the park."

Dawson says they had some money from sponsors to help with the cost, but Cargill stepped up to cover it.

"So, the folks that had already said "We want to be a part of that." Now, we're in the process of building a three sided shelter. So any of the individuals who had sponsored something for the skating rink, now their sponsorship is going towards the shelter."

He says they hope to have it up and start flooding this week.
